About 20th Century Fox
The Fox Film Corporation opened its doors in 1915 and the merger that created the Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation happened in May of 1935.

Young actors of the day who signed up with Twentieth Century-Fox included Henry Ford, Gene Tierney, Sonja Henie and Tyrone Power. Alice Faye and Shirley Temple were also under contract. During the WWII their biggest box office hit was Betty Grable.

After the war and the mass introduction of television, the audiences began to drift away from theaters. To try to stem the tide, Twentieth Century-Fox sunk a great deal of money into CinemaScope, which gave a slight illusion of depth without needing 3-D glasses. Special equipment was needed in the movie theaters and Fox agreed to help pay the cost for conversion which ran at about $25,000 per movie screen. In order to ensure that Cinemascope would dominate the market, Fox gave access to the process to any rival studio that wanted to use it - and since two blockbusters of the time (The Robe and How to Marry a Millionaire) were produced in CinemaScope... many took him up on the offer.

Though CinemaScope brought audiences back to theaters for a time, by 1956 the numbers again began to dwindle. Today, you can see parallels in the movie industry as they attempt to win back audiences with new high-definition screens, high-definition audio and 3D technology... with and without the glasses. Only time will tell if this turns out to be one of the sound ideas.
